Profile:

A match-winner one-day all-rounder in the late eighties, Steve Waugh evolved into perhaps the world's most dependable Test batsman in the late nineties. Waugh first came into the Australian side in 1985-86 as an aggressive medium-pacer who could score valuable runs in the middle order. It was in this role that he was a key player in Australia's 1987 World Cup victory. Back trouble has made his bowling less frequent in recent years, but still able to swing matches on occasions. It is, however, his tenacious batting which has been the key to his success throughout the nineties - the ability to score big hundreds when Australia has needed them most. Perhaps his greatest performances were his 200 against the West Indies at Sabina Park in 1995 and his centuries in each innings at Old Trafford in 1997, and at one-day level his 120 against South Africa in the 1999 World Cup. He took over the captaincy of the Australian one-day team in 1997-98 and then of the Test team upon Mark Taylor's retirement in early 1999, and was in command when Australia won its second World Cup later that year. With twin Mark has formed quite the most extraordinary brotherly team in the history of international cricket. Steve's nicknames have included "Drobe" (short for Waugh-drobe), but these days is better known as "Tugga" (short for Tugga-waugh).
