Profile:

Michael Bevan is one of Australia's most gifted and exciting stroke players, and one of the most valuable limited-overs batsmen in the world. A left-handed batsman very effective in off-side play, Bevan is also a very fast runner between wickets, and his ability to take quick ones and twos in the late overs of one-day internationals has been critical to many an Australian victory. Scorer of a century on first-class debut for South Australia, Bevan was a highly impressive performer in the Sheffield Shield after moving to New South Wales. He appeared set to take over Allan Border's role at number six in the Australian Test lineup, but a weakness against pace made his Test appearances infrequent. A useful left-arm wrist spinner, Bevan won the Adelaide Test against the West Indies in 1996-97 with his bowling, but his inability to maintain a consistent length has proved a liability in the long term. Bevan made an enormous impact in his two years with Yorkshire in 1995 and 1996, and made a reappearance in county cricket for Sussex in 1998. Bevan was a member of Australia's victorious 1999 World Cup side and is consistently rated among the top one or two limited-over batsmen in the world.
