Profile:

Gifted but nevertheless aberrant in talent, Ian Harvey is an all-rounder who has represented Victoria, Gloucestershire and various Australian sides since the time of his first class debut in 1993/94. Not especially tall, he is a medium pace bowler, an attacking middle order batsman, and an enthusiastic fieldsman. As a bowler, his main assets are skidding bounce and an almost always deceptive slower ball; as a batsman, he has a noted weakness against spin and he never looks the most elegant player but he is ruthlessly aggressive and in fact holds the record for the second fastest fifty ever made in domestic one-day cricket. Following sound performances at the State level, Harvey received a call up to the Australian ODI side in 1997/98 and acquitted himself creditably without ever being able to cement a permanent berth. His attempts to secure what was the then unfilled all-rounder's spot in the national lineup were also compromised by his axing from the Victorian side later the same season and, even though the omission was not a lengthy one, he has duly rarely donned his county's colours again since. Not surprisingly, Harvey was understood to have been especially disappointed by his exclusion from Australia's 1999 World Cup squad. In many ways, it will likely be the extent to which he is able to convert that disappointment into consistently impressive performances for Victoria over coming seasons which will determine his ultimate fate as a cricketer.
